‘Around the Corner’ a loving look, worth a look

VIEWERS WILL HAVE THE chance tonight to get a view of the Hub City, the Cheese Capitol of the World, from a different point of view.

Plymouth is the focus tonight for the season four premiere of “Around the Corner with John McGivern” on Milwaukee Public Television.

A full house in the Plymouth High School Acuity Auditorium got a sneak preview of the show Monday night and gave the half-hour show an enthusiastic thumbs up.

McGivern – already well known in these parts for a number of appearances here, in benefit performances for Camp Anokijig in Plymouth and for one-man shows at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan – gave Plymouth and the surrounding area his unique comedic once-over.

It was evident from the views of everything big and small about our fair city – from mounds of cheese at Sargento Foods to tasty cupcakes from More Frosting Please – that McGivern, like so many others, has a warm spot in his heart for Plymouth.

As he described it in his summary of the show, “Plymouth is like a favorite sweater – comfy cozy!”

We really can’t say it any better than McGivern’s summary of the episode on the Milwaukee Public Television website, so we’ll just repeat what he said here:

“Plymouth is a community of Makers: Sargento makes cheese, Drewry Farms makes maple syrup, artists make art (don’t say it – duh!), Plymouth Foam makes those giant foam airplanes, Shelly makes cupcakes, a myriad of volunteers help Linda make Camo Quilts, Road America makes John’s adrenaline pump, Allechant Boutique makes men long for the good old days, and John Gurda, by asking us to meet him at a Giant Cow, made our day! Know what else is made in Plymouth? Friendships, fun and a lasting impression that will always bring a warm spot to our hearts – which is a good thing since it was about 20 degrees when we started shooting. But still, we couldn’t have asked for a warmer start to season 4.”

And we couldn’t have asked for a warmer, friendlier – and better – view of our hometown than we get from “Around the Corner with John McGivern.”

It’s the same irreverent, but loving, treatment Sheboygan Falls got from the “Around the Corner with John McGivern” crew last year, and it’s well worth a half-hour of your television viewing time tonight or whenever it is shown again.

And it was also nice to hear that the turnout for Monday’s preview showing was the biggest ever for an “Around the Corner” preview event yet – even bigger than in Sheboygan Falls last year. It’s always nice when Plymouth can top Sheboygan Falls in any kind of competition.
