Dues

To the Editor,

I heard over and over again a radio ad sponsored by a union that opposes a Right to Work law being promoted around the state of Wisconsin.

That ad was meant to deceive the listener into believing that the government should not get involved in a matter that is best dealt with privately. That slant is totally contrary to the actual facts.

The need for a Right to Work law stems from a deal between the unions and government officials made decades ago. The laws that resulted are very simple.

With a majority vote, employees can create a closed union shop where no one is allowed to work unless he belongs to a union. On top of that, dues to the union were no longer voluntary and were deducted from the worker’s paycheck without his consent.

That continues to this day in union manufacturing corporations and construction firms. Another aspect of that law denies workers the right to recertify a union once established within a company thus guaranteeing an unending flow of dollars to the union treasury at worker’s expense for as long as the company is willing to do business in Wisconsin.

That begs the question; what do the unions do with the millions of dollars collected? Their first and foremost concern is to perpetuate the flow of dues from the workers to the union.

That is done by electing sympathetic politicians who will not interfere with that stream of money and in turn will receive financial support and endorsements from the unions.

Dues also fund union halls, demonstrations, pickets, lobbying, junkets, six-figure union salaries, and the aforementioned ad; little of which benefits workers.

Tell your state representatives that the closed shop laws are corrupting, unfair to workers, and need to be dismantled via Right to Work legislation.
