The Tigers’ constant pressure defense, both full-court and halfcourt, stymied the Resorters’ offense in the first half which saw HGHS seize a 32-3 halftime lead. Elkhart suffered 32 turnovers on the night, including many in the first half off steals by HGHS which led to several fast-break baskets.

“The kids did a pretty good job defensively and they did a good job overall with doing the little things,” said Tiger head coach Eric Worth.

“It was nice to get everyone in the game. Everyone played hard and did their job out there.”

The Tigers upped their second- place Central Lakeshore Conference record to 5-1 (7-3 overall). HGHS is one-half game behind league-leading Ozaukee which is 5-0.

The Resorters fell to 0-5 in the CLC (1-7 overall).

“Not a lot of positives to take away from this game, and a defi- nite step back,” said Resorter head coach Ray Mlada.

“We shot poorly and got hammered on the glass and were horrible in defensive transition.”

The Tigers outrebounded EL-G 45-21, including a 22-3 advantage on the offensive board. HGHS scored several points on follow-up shots and by attacking the hoop.

HGHS led only 2-1 midway through the first quarter before kicking it into gear. The Tigers went on a 13-0 run to take a 15-1 lead going into the second period. HGHS scored several points in transition off steals. Derrick Grimm and Nick Brickner led the Tigers’ scoring in the opening quarter with four each.

The Tigers outscored Elkhart 17-2 in the second quarter, keyed by their defense as they scored several points off steals. Eight Tigers scored in the period. The Resorters didn’t hit their first field goal until the 4:00 mark in the second period.

Brickner, a junior forward, led HGHS in scoring with nine points and assists, three. Devin Gallenberger and Jonah Gerber had two assists each.

Jordan Miller paced the Tigers in rebounding with six.

Max Kossman and Collin Leibham led Elkhart’s offense with five points apiece. The team had no rebounder with more than two.

“I thought Max Kossman and Collin Leibham played well and I thought Owen Kalbacken and Tyler Schultz played extremely hard but other than that this was a huge disappointment,” said Mlada.
