Get government out of the way and lower the tax burden

CAPITOL CONNECTION
Devin LeMahieu
9th Senatorial District

Earlier this month, surrounded by family and friends, I had the great honor of taking the oath of office to be your state Senator in Madison. The campaign was an incredible journey, and I am so grateful to the voters of the 9th Senate District putting their trust in me. I am determined not to let you, the voter, down.

There are a number of key issues facing our state I look forward to tackling. To begin, as Chair of the Elections and Local Government Committee, I am taking a careful review of the Government Accountability Board (GAB), the state’s top elections agency.

The GAB was created by well-intentioned lawmakers several years ago. However, in recent years, the agency has come under fire from Democrats and Republicans alike for its uneven administration of election law. A non-partisan agency recently released a troublesome audit: The agency failed to follow the law in numerous instances, even waiting several years to determine if felons had illegally voted in elections. The notion that a legitimately cast ballot could be cancelled-out by someone voting illegally is completely unacceptable to me.

In Madison, there has been a great deal of talk about school accountability as well. Here in the 9th Senate District, we are generally blessed with fine schools. Most of the parents in the district I’ve talked to have positive feedback about their child’s learning experience.

However, many of these same parents also want to know their child is receiving the best education possible. If a school does not fit the needs of a child, the parent should be empowered to find an educational setting that can help his or her child. This also means parents should have access to the state’s grading system for schools, and the system should include all schools, including pubic, charter, and choice.

Please know, however, that my top priorities remain the same as the central themes of my campaign. I want to get government out of the way so that entrepreneurs can create jobs. The tax burden in Wisconsin remains too high. I will work to lower the tax burden in Wisconsin, so that families can keep a more of their hardearned dollars. And, as promised, I am willing to work with anyone, Republican or Democrat, to do this.

In the coming weeks, I will be holding office hours in the District in order to get a better understanding of the issues important to you. In addition, please feel free to contact me anytime toll-free at (888) 295-8750, or by e-mail at Sen.Le- Mahieu@legis.wi.gov. It’s a privilege to represent you in Madison.

Senator Devin LeMahieu (ROostburg) succeeds former Senator Joe Leibham (R-Sheboygan), who did not seek re-election. The 9th Senate District includes parts of Calumet, Manitowoc, and Sheboygan Counties.
