Richter propels Ozaukee to rout over EL-G

BOYS BASKETBALL

FREDONIA – Junior Mike Richter poured in 24 points to lead the Ozaukee Warriors to a 66-23 drubbing of Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah here Tuesday night in a boys basketball game.

Owen Miller added 18 points for the Warriors who improved to 6-1 in the Central Lakeshore Conference (8-2 overall). Ozaukee and Howards Grove share the CLC lead and square off for sole possession of first Friday night at HGHS.

The Resorters fell to 0-7 in the CLC (1-9 overall).

Elkhart hung tough early on, trailing only 9-6 after one quarter. The Warriors busted the contest open by outscoring EL-G 45-8 in the second and third quarters combined, including a 27-2 advantage in the third.

“We struggled with their 1-2-2 half-court trap in the third quarter, rarely able to get the ball into scoring position,” said Resorter head coach Ray Mlada.

“We again struggled to score the ball – shooting just 19.3 percent from the field.

“Our young kids played well, especially to start the game which is very encouraging. We held up OK on the glass but really struggled against pressure.

“Ozaukee has a real nice team and they are well-coached. I thought our kids played hard but at times we get overwhelmed, allowing opponents to go on scoring runs we are unable to match because of our lack of firepower,” said Mlada.

Senior guard Trevor Taubenheim paced Elkhart in scoring with 11. The Resorters’ top rebounders were Jordan Bahr and Owen Kalbacken with six each and Hunter Schoenborn, five.

Ozaukee won the junior varsity game, 68-20. Jarrett Schanke led the Resorters in scoring with seven.
