Panthers notch first EWC dual win

KIEL – The Plymouth Panthers took advantage of seven forfeits by Kiel to post a 48-23 win in an Eastern Wisconsin Conference wrestling dual here Tuesday night.

The Panthers upped their EWC record to 1-4 (3-12 overall).

PHS won only one of the five matches wrestled as Cole Bruggink earned a pin over Justin Kannich in 1:19 at 220 pounds.

Plymouth’s winners by forfeit were Connor Schmidt at 106; Keagan Gustin, 126; Nathan Francis, 132; Cole Meyer, 170; Jesse Schwarten, 182; Jake Hefter, 195; and Gabe Haun at 285.

The Raiders were led by Justin Muehlbauer with a pin at 113 and Phillip Schultz with a technical fall at 120.

“Cole Bruggink looked dominant with a first-period pin,” said PHS head coach Ben Chapman.

“Erik and Izack Ohman both wrestled tough matches that came down to the last second. They never gave up and continued to push the pace even though they came up a bit short in the end.”

Erik Ohman lost, 5-3, to Ben Mannenbach in the 152 match. Izack Ohman fell, 3-1, to Evan Mauer at 160.

In their previous EWC dual, the Panthers lost to powerhouse Two Rivers, 60-0, on Jan. 8. The Purple Raiders are ranked No. 5 in Crossface’s Division 2 poll.
