Defense sparks Tigers to CLC rout

HOWARDS GROVE – Defense has been a staple for the Howards Grove boys basketball team all season and it played a key role again Thursday night in the Tigers’ 67-46 rout over host Sheboygan Christian.

The Tigers held the Eagles to only 34-percent shooting (14 of 41) from the field and got their transition offense going in the second half by playing strong defense.

“The boys played a tough game from start to finish. It was very physical throughout and eventually I think our defense prevailed,” said Tiger head coach Eric Worth.

“We got some key stops when we needed them and we had another really nice game of sharing the ball.”

The Tigers hiked their Central Lakeshore Conference record to 8-1 (11-3 overall). The Eagles dropped to 2-5 in the CLC (4-7 overall).

HGHS broke the game open by outscoring the Eagles 40-26 in the second half after leading just 27- 20 at halftime.

Senior guard Ethan Brinkman sparked the Tigers’ offense with 25 points, including five threepoint goals. Senior forward Trent Beninghaus added 15 points. Beninghaus led in rebounding with a career-high 18.

“Trent Beninghaus was a horse on the glass for us again and really did a pretty good job of controlling the middle,” said Worth.

“Overall, it was a good win against a good team. I’m very happy with the way the guys competed.”

Brinkman paced HGHS in assists with five and Zach Fritz had four.

Senior guard Caleb Kelley paced Christian in scoring with 12.
