Tigers earn key CLC win, stay in first

CEDAR GROVE – The Howards Grove Tigers outscored Cedar Grove-Belgium 37-25 in the second half to fuel a 67-52 win in a key Central Lakeshore Conference boys basketball game here Saturday night.

The Tigers remained atop the CLC race as they improved to 9-1 (12-3 overall). The Rockets, who would’ve taken over first with a win, slipped to 8-3 in the league (8-5 overall).

Senior guard Ethan Brinkman ignited the Tigers’ offense with 23 points. Brinkman also had a teamhigh five rebounds and was second in assists with four. Derrick Grimm led in assists with five.

“Overall, I felt both teams competed at a high level. We jumped out to an early lead and they hit some shots in the second quarter to tighten things up at halftime, 30-27 [in favor of HGHS],” said Tiger head coach Eric Worth whose team was up 19- 10 after one quarter.

“I felt our intensity level went up another notch at the start of the second half. We had some really nice possessions and more importantly some big stops on the defensive side of the ball.

“My guys played very hard and made some huge plays for each other down the stretch. I love the way were competing right now and I’m proud of the effort my guys are bringing on a daily basis,” said Worth.

The Tigers shot well from the field at 55 percent. HGHS outscored the Rockets 15-5 at the free-throw line.

Josh Weiss paced Cedar Grove in scoring with 18 points.
