Town Board still opposed to State 23 plans

PLYMOUTH – The Town Board promised residents of the River Heights subdivision they will stay firm in their opposition to routing a State 23 frontage road through their neighborhood.

“We know how you feel and be assured this board will keep you informed and will keep you guys abreast,” of any plans, Supervisor Ray Gremminger told several residents who attended Monday’s board meeting. “We are not crazy about it either.”

The board voted last Monday to list its opposition to the latest plan from the state Department of Transportation for upgrading State 23 between State 57 and 67 to freeway status.

That plan calls for ending the current frontage road at Fairview Drive/County OJ and then routing it north for roughly half a mile on OJ to a new road west to connect with Terrace Avenue and River Heights Drive in the town before intersecting State 67.

“We know how everybody feels about it out that way,” Supervisor Roger Rortvedt said when River Heights subdivision residents asked about the plan during the public input agenda item.

Gremminger noted that the town still has not heard from the DOT in response to the town’s onthe record opposition.

Supervisor Gene Blindauer raised an issue with trucks dropping off and picking up cars at the Van Horn Automotive storage facility on County O – the former Jim Pankow building.

He noted that the car carriers and other trucks often park on the twolane highway to load and unload.

“It’s a major traffic hazard whenever they do that,” Blindauer said. “If nothing else, they could widen the driveway so they can back in better” and get off the roadway.

The board directed Town Attorney Jim Hughes to write a letter to Van Horn sharing the board’s concerns about the situation.
