BOYS SWIMMING

SHOREWOOD – Senior Evan Klemme placed third in diving to lead the Plymouth Panthers at the Small School State Invitational boys swimming and diving meet here Saturday.

Klemme scored 339.70 points in the 11-dive event. His teammate, junior Anghelo Gangano, earned fourth with 314.00.

The Panthers tallied 173 points and finished seventh in the meet which included many of the top Division 2 teams in the state. Mc- Farland won the 18-team meet with 354.5 and Monona Grove was second at 312. Defending D-2 state champion Madison Edgewood took with 179.

Monona Grove is ranked No. 1 in the latest Wisconsin Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association D-2 poll and McFarland is No. 2. PHS is rated 10th.

The Panthers’ top finisher in the swimming competition was the 200-yard freestyle relay which earned fourth in a season-best 1 minute, 34.99 seconds which ranks fourth in D-2. The relay members were juniors Ryan Holec and Chaz Halderson and seniors Brent Thiel and Zach Gambrell.

“We had a nice meet. We swam really well in some spots but the good news is there are still improvements that can be made,” said Panther head coach Clare Sedlacek.

“These guys have worked really hard this year and they’ve produced some really good times but I know they are not finished. They have set high goals and have done everything they can do [so far] to reach those goals,” said Sedlacek.

“Evan and Anghelo did very good on Saturday. Most of the Division 2 divers in the state were there,” said PHS diving coach Greg Heberlein.

Holec swam a career-best 23.02 seconds in the 50 freestyle which gave him sixth. His time ranks him 10th among D-2 swimmers who are most likely to compete in the 50 at the sectionals.

The Panthers’ 400 freestyle relay posted a season-best 3:29.65, which was more than a two-second improvement, en route to capturing sixth. The relay included Holec, senior Lucas Collard, Thiel and Gambrell.

The Panthers will compete in the EWC Championship Meet Saturday at Two Rivers. Diving will start at 10:30 a.m. and swimming is set to begin at 2 p.m.
