Honoring courage and sacrifice

The Ladewig-Zinkgraf American Legion Post 243 held their annual Four Chaplains commemoration ceremony Sunday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.

The ceremony honors four U.S. Army chaplains who helped victims of the U.S. Army transport ship the Dorchester when it was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine Feb. 3, 1943.

Despite the heroic efforts of the chaplains and others, only 230 of the 904 men aboard survived.

Among those who perished was Virgil John De- Munck of Plymouth, who was remembered during the ceremony as well.
