Rhude’s three-ball gives Panthers crucial win

GIRLS BASKETBALL

TWO RIVERS – Sophomore guard Lydia Rhude buried a threepointer with only three seconds left to give the Plymouth Panthers a huge 59-57 win over host Two Rivers in girls basketball action Tuesday night.

The victory keeps PHS tied for the Eastern Wisconsin Conference lead with Kiel and Waupun at 9-3. The Panthers improved to 14-5 overall. Two Rivers slipped to 7-5 in the EWC (9-11 overall).

Alexi Walesh gave the Purple Raiders a 57-56 lead with two free throws with 12 seconds remaining. Rhude’s basket was set up when Olivia Jankowski drove to the hoop and kicked the ball out to Rhude who shot immediately.

“Lydia and Olivia really stepped up at the end. Lydia had no fear,” said Panther head coach Brad Shutter.

“This is a huge win on the road against a good Two Rivers team. We gotta win the next two.”

PHS plays at Campbellsport Friday night and hosts Kiel Feb. 19 in its final two EWC games.

Junior guard Jordyn Pieper scored a season-high 21 points to spark the PHS attack. Pieper exploded for 13 points in the second half to lead her team. Rhude tallied 12 off the bench, including 10 in the second half. Morgan Lisowe contributed 10.

The Panthers rallied from a 10-point deficit which they faced early in the third quarter. PHS, keyed by its defense, outscored Two Rivers 18-12 in the third period to close to within 40-39.

Two Rivers led 28-21 at halftime, fueled by six three-point goals in the opening half. PHS held the Purple Raiders to three treys in the second half.

“In the second half, everybody stepped up their pressure defense and we were more aggressive on offense. We got out on their shooters better in the second half,” said Shutter.

“Jordyn, Morgan and Lydia increased our intensity on defense. Lydia came through big in the fourth quarter and Gwen Streblow had two big baskets in the fourth.”

Pieper led PHS in rebounds with eight and Streblow had six. Emily Majerus and Streblow had a teamhigh four assists each. Pieper also led in steals with three.

Walesh scored 20 points to pace Two Rivers.
