Fourth-seeded Elkhart, 8-13, advances to the semifinals Friday at No. 1-seeded Sheboygan Christian (19-2) at 7 p.m. The Resorters lost to the Central Lakeshore Conference champion Eagles twice during the season in CLC play.

Living Word, the No. 5 seed, ended its season at 9-12. The Timber Wolves lost to Elkhart in the regular season, 55-26.

The Resorters got off to a slow start and found themselves down 6-0 with 5:20 left in the first quarter as they committed three turnovers in their first five possessions. Elkhart bounced back, keyed by its full-court press and half-court trapping, to outscore the Timber Wolves 30-10 the rest of the first half and go up 30-16 at halftime.

Elkhart’s aggressive defense forced 17 turnovers in the first half and many of the them resulted in transition baskets. The Resorters went on a 20-5 run in the sec- ond quarter to build a 30-14 lead. Sophomore guard Sonia Schubert and junior forward Rachael scored five points each to lead Elkhart during the spurt.

The Timber Wolves scored seven unanswered points, led by Jessie Juergensen’s three-point goal, to start the third quarter which cut Elkhart’s lead to 30-23. The Resorters responded with a 16-0 tear which put the game away as they stretched their lead to 46-23 midway through the fourth period.

Flora hit seven points to key the run. The Resorters’ pressure defense forced 13 turnovers during the stretch which saw the Timber Wolves go over 10 minutes without scoring.

“We were a little sluggish in the beginning and I think that was because we hadn’t played since last Tuesday. We picked it up in the second quarter,” said Elkhart senior forward Mariah Ausloos.

“We played really hard on defense. Our defense was the key to the game and we rebounded well. We have worked a lot on our rebounding and it paid off. We ran the floor and that’s what we do best,” she said.

“Once we extended our defense and got the game up and down the floor, we were able to extend our lead,” said Resorter head coach Donny Kulow.

“Our pressure defense got us going. We just don’t just want to force turnovers but we want to score off of them. We attacked their zone well and were able to finish, and we rebounded.

“It’s nice to win and move on,” Kulow said.

Elkhart’s defense, which forced 32 turnovers, was led by Schubert who had six steals. Ausloos and Emily Holzmann added three each.

Flora led the Resorters in scoring with 16 points and rebounding, six. Ausloos and Emma Feldmann contributed five boards each. Feldmann led in blocked shots with three.

Holzmann and Schubert paced Elkhart in assists with three each.

“Rachael really stepped up. It was by far her best game of the season,” said Kulow.

“Our guard play was outstanding. Camrie Schmitz [sophomore guard] came in and played really well.”

Schmitz tallied nine points off the bench.

Junior post player Sophie Hoelz led Living Word scorers with 11.
