In search of crane counters

On Saturday, April 18, 2015 from 5:30 a.m. to 7:30 am, the International Crane Foundation (ICF) will sponsor the 40th Annual Midwest Crane Count. Over 2,000 volunteer participants from throughout Wisconsin and portions of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, and Minnesota participate in the Spring survey, which gathers information on the abundance and distribution of cranes in the upper Midwest.

New volunteers interested in taking part should first contact their local Sheboygan County coordinator: Janet or Andy Raddatz by phone (920) 892-6335, or email araddatz@wi.rr.com. More information, including crane calls, can be found at www.cranecount.org.

Volunteers are encouraged to attend an organizational training meeting on Tuesday, March 31st at 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at Maywood, 3615 Mueller Road in Sheboygan. At the meeting, participants will select survey sites and receive observation forms and instructions.

ICF sponsors the Annual Midwest Crane Count as a part of its mission to conserve the world’s 15 species of cranes and the natural communities on which they depend.
