Tigers Grind Out Reginal Semi-Final Win

HOWARDS GROVE – The Howards Grove Tigers’ defense was outstanding, as it has been throughout the season, propelling them to a 39-25 win over Random Lake in a Division 4 boys regional basketball semifinal game here Friday night.

HGHS, the No. 1 seed, improved to 18-5. The No. 5-seeded Rams ended their season at 9-15.

In a slow-paced, grind-it-out game, the Tigers held the Rams to only six points in the second half to stay in control. HGHS built a 26-19

Random Lake scoring: Austin Martin 2, Evan DeBroux 10, Logan Martin 8, Aaron Rathke 5. Three-point goals: DeBroux 1, Rathke 1.

Howards Grove scoring: Derrick Grimm 8, Luke Stanczyk 4, Alex Strege 4, Andrew Reinemann 4, Trent Beninghaus 4, Ethan Brinkman 15.

Field goals: Random Lake 11-29, 38%; Howards Grove 14-28, 50%. Free throws: Random Lake 1-4, 50%; Howards Grove 11-16, 69%.

Rebounds: Random Lake 15, Howards Grove 20. Turnovers: Random Lake 14, Howards Grove 8. halftime lead.

Senior guard Ethan Brinkman keyed the Tigers’ offense with 15 points. Andrew Reinemann handed out a team-high three assists. Trent Beninghaus led in rebounds with seven.

“It was a tough game on Friday night. Random Lake ran a four-corner stall the majority of the game, so possessions were extremely limited,” said Tiger head coach Eric Worth.

“It was very tough for us to get any sort of rhythm. I credit our kids though for fighting through it and making the most of the opportunities that came.

“I thought our defense did a pretty good job despite them trying to open things up and holding the ball outside.”

Junior guard Derrick Grimm was the Tigers’ second-leading scorer with eight and Worth thought he played very well.

Junior forward Evan DeBroux paced the Rams in scoring with 10.
