Wings for Landen takes flight

Three memorial baseball scoreboards planned at SFES, SFHS

In his four short years on earth, Landen Wachter lit up the lives of those who knew him.

Nearly two months after his tragic passing in an automobile accident on Jan. 21, members of the Sheboygan Falls community are stepping up to make sure Landen’s memory shines bright in his hometown for many years to come.

The Wings for Landen memorial fundraising campaign, spearheaded by Sheboygan Falls resident Craig Senglaub, launched Monday, March 9 with the goal of constructing new scoreboards at three Sheboygan Falls elementary and high school baseball diamonds.

The three new scoreboards will honor the memory of the late 4-year-old Sheboygan Falls boy, who loved the game of baseball.

After hearing about the accident that claimed Landen’s life, Senglaub said he knew he had to do something special to honor his memory.

“I am a friend of Salon 511 where Landen’s mother, Nicole, works and I’ve known her since March 2011,” Senglaub said. “I also have a son, so this really hit close to home for me. My heart goes out to her and her family. I can’t imagine what they are going through. I’ve coached baseball in Sheboygan Falls and I knew how much Landen loved the game of baseball. He lived for it.

THE WINGS FOR LANDEN fundraising campaign is now under way to help raise money to add three new baseball scoreboards at Sheboygan Falls Elementary School and Sheboygan Falls High School to honor the memory of 4-year-old Landen Wachter of Sheboygan Falls, who died in an automobile accident on Jan. 21. - Submitted photo and graphic THE WINGS FOR LANDEN fundraising campaign is now under way to help raise money to add three new baseball scoreboards at Sheboygan Falls Elementary School and Sheboygan Falls High School to honor the memory of 4-year-old Landen Wachter of Sheboygan Falls, who died in an automobile accident on Jan. 21. - Submitted photo and graphic “The baseball scoreboards are a fitting way to honor Landen and help his family, while supporting baseball in Sheboygan Falls as well,” he said. “The support from the community has been great. I am excited about having this happen as a great way to remember Landen and to support his family through such a difficult time/”

The scoreboards will showcase a special memorial plaque featuring Landen’s picture and life story and the Wings for Landen logo.

Major Wings for Landen project supporter Plankview Green Lifestyle Center will also be prominently featured on each scoreboard.

“Ron Burrows of Plankview Green is paying for one of the scoreboards,” Senglaub said. “I can’t say enough about what Ron has done to help get this off the ground. He has been so supportive.

“These scoreboards will have an old-school, throwback type of design with manual operation, which I think people will really like,” he said. “The first scoreboard will be put up at the eighth-grade diamond behind the elementary school and we are planning to have two more on diamonds C and D at the high school.”

Apparel order forms can be picked up at Day Dream Cafe and Salon 511 and additional ordering information is available online at the Sheboygan Falls Falcons Fan Gear Facebook page.

“The apparel ordering period started on March 9 and it will continue through Wednesday, April 1,” Senglaub said. “Our goal is to cover the remainder of the scoreboard costs through the sale of the Wings for Landen apparel. We may also be able to use some of the proceeds for baseball equipment for the youth rec. programs. I am very optimistic that we will be able to do that.

“Over 600 people attended a candelight vigil that was held at River Park just after Landen’s death and I’ve been receiving probably 50 e-mails a day from people interested in supporting Wings for Landen,” he said. “It takes a lot of support to make a project like this happen and so far it has been spreading like wildfire.”

Senglaub also has plans to honor Landen’s memory and commemorate the Wings for Landen scoreboard project during a Sheboygan Falls High School varsity baseball game this spring.

“We are hoping to get the first scoreboard at the elementary school up by May 18th and shortly after that in early June I am hoping to put together a dedication ceremony at a varsity baseball game,” Senglaub said. “I would like to get all of Landen’s classmates to come in their shirts and just properly acknowledge the support from everyone that has been involved. This is a big deal for our community and I am looking forward to seeing it through to our final goal of getting all three scoreboards up and running.”
