Panthers compete well in opener

OSHKOSH – The Plymouth Panthers opened their 2015 boys track season on a positive note at Tuesday’s Oshkosh Invitational large school indoor meet.

PHS tied for 14th place with eight points in the 22-team meet at UWOshkosh’s Kolf Sports Center. Bay Port won the title with 80 and Green Bay Preble was second at 73.

The Panthers had four placewinners (top-eight finishers in each event scored team points), led by junior Samuel Staehling in the high jump with a tie for fifth place at 5-10. Plymouth’s next highest finisher was the 800-meter relay which earned sixth in 1 minute, 38.55 seconds. The relay included Dominic Bocchini, Staehling, Evan Sebranek and Jake Schneider.

Plymouth’s other place-winners, both eighth, were the 1,600 relay and Cody Kuhn in the long jump. The relay team of Bocchini, Corby Gafney, Zach Albers and Jordan Marshall was clocked in 3:43.60. Kuhn’s best jump was 19-1.

“It was a good opening meet for us. Our athletes performed well, given only six days of practice,” said Panther head coach Jay Grosshuesch.

“The field kids did real well, especially Cody and Samuel. Our runners hit some real good times, especially our relay teams. This meet has some real strong teams in it, so we enjoyed the good competition and our kids rose to the occasion.”
