Cyber identity UW-S lecture topic

The University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan invites community residents, faculty, staff and students to the next lecture in the Spring 2015 UW-Sheboygan Speakers’ Series Tuesday, April 7 at 7 p.m. in the Wombat Room (Room 2114) on the UW-S campus.

Former UW-Sheboygan Associate Lecturer of Philosophy and Religion Jerry Molitor will present “Cyber Identity: You Really Are Just a Number.”

Molitor, who has 35 years of experience in the technology field, currently works in the banking industry as a director of risk management protecting customer information, preventing unauthorized access to these resources and maintaining customer access to their financial accounts.

According to Molitor, he chose this topic to remind all of us how new technology can blind us to the dangers and ill-intentions of some individuals and organizations.

“It is important to reflect on the effects of how technology has become a major force in society,” Molitor said. “The use of technology feeds our insatiable appetite for convenience, instant gratification and the desire to be connected. We must remember that responsible and cautious use of cyber technology requires informed and educated uses.”

Guests attending this lecture can expect to learn how we, as individuals, may be reduced to a numerical commodity.

“We may be delivering our very identities to the underground free market to be sold to the highest bidder,” Molitor said. “I hope to raise community awareness of the dangers and pitfalls that technology brings and what it takes to be an educated and responsible user.”

All presentations are discussed in an open forum format and are held in the Wombat Room (Room 2114) at 7 p.m. Admission is free to the community, faculty, staff and students.
