Falcons shoot for return to the top

After winning the Eastern Wisconsin Conference title four of the past five seasons, the Sheboygan Falls High School girls soccer team aims for a return to the top in 2015.

Last season Falls finished third in the EWC with a 6-2-4 record (13-4-7 overall).

The Falcons won the Notre Dame and Cedar Grove Invites. They also defeated Kiel in the regional semifinal game and lost to Grafton in the regional final playoff contest.

SFHS head coach Brian Mentink, who returns for his 11th season, is very optimistic about the Falcons’ squad this season.

“We have a very solid returning group,” said Mentink. “We should be very balanced on both sides of the ball. This team will have to take advantage of every opportunity to score goals.”

The Falcons lost 10 seniors to graduation that included All-EWC selections Tiffany Fischer and Erin Beeck.

Falls returns All-EWC seniors Abby Mauer, Nicole Preder and junior Becky Raeder.

Other returnees include seniors Natalie DePagter, MaKayla Tomlinson, junior Mia Bartel, Payton Benzschawel, Asha Ritchie, Taylor Tomlinson and sophomores Rachel Wilke, Morgan DePagter, Alex Tupper and Lauren Louko.

Newcomers are seniors Kate Bassuener and Laura Nielson.

Mentink commented that since the numbers are down, the program will only field a varsity team this season.

“Some of the positions are set, however, we may rotate goalies,” remarked Mentink. “We have a tough non-conference schedule and the EWC will be very competitive again.”
