Resorters hold on to win season opener

ELKHART LAKE – The Elkhart Lake-Glenbeula Resorters held off a late rally by Cedar Grove-Belgium to earn an 8-7 softball win here Tuesday afternoon.

The Central Lakeshore Conference game was the Resorters’ season opener. The Rockets fell to 0-1 in the CLC and 0-2 overall.

Elkhart led 8-3 heading into the top of the seventh where Cedar Grove scored four runs on six hits to pull within 8-7. Resorter sophomore Holly Zorn pitched out of a jam as the Rockets stranded runners at second and third bases. Leadoff batter Mandi Race flied out to center fielder Claire Feldmann to end the game.

The Resorters scored the eventual winning run in the sixth which gave them an 8-3 lead. Emma Feldmann drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on Mandy McLaughlin’s single.

Elkhart banged out 10 hits, led by Paige Weber’s two. All nine batters in the order had at least one hit. Sophomore Sonia Schubert belted a solo home run in the fifth.

McLaughlin paced the Resorters in runs with three. Elkhart swiped six bases, led by Emma Feldmann’s two.

Morgan Green had a team-high three hits and two RBIs for the Rockets.

Zorn was the winning pitcher – allowing six earned runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts, three hit batters and only one walk.

Race took the loss and went the distance. She surrendered six walks, struck out five and allowed five earned runs.

“For the first game, I was proud [of the team]. This is a good start for us,” said Resorter head coach Brian Feldmann.

“We got flustered at the end. Our youth showed up a bit but the girls buckled down. This win is a confidence-builder.”

Elkhart had one junior and the rest underclassmen in the lineup.

“Defensively, we played well. Mandy had a diving catch in the outfield. Our hitting was exceptional,” said coach Feldmann.

“Holly buckled down at the end and pulled through [on the mound]. I was real pleased with her. She pitched out of some jams and had great defense behind her.”
