Panthers earn second at Kaukauna Invite

KAUKAUNA – The Plymouth Panthers crowned three flight champions as they finished a strong second place in Saturday’s Kaukauna Invitational boys tennis tournament.

PHS scored 39½ points, only 3½ behind champion Kimberly (43), a Division 1 team. The Panthers, a Division 2 squad, were making their season debut.

The Panthers’ first-place finishers in the seven-team meet included: sophomore Lex Eggert at No. 4 singles; junior Gabe Binversie and his brother, Gavin, a sophomore, at No. 1 doubles; and juniors Anghelo Gangano and Eric Novak at No. 3 doubles.

Gangano and Novak split the No. 3 doubles title with a Kaukauna team because the flight used a round-robin format.

The Panthers’ other placewinners included: Matt Primozic, second at No. 1 singles; Ryan Blend, fifth, No. 2 singles; Ryan Gallagher, third, No. 3 singles; and Mitch Heun and Connor McManus, third at No. 2 doubles.

Eggert defeated Kimberly’s Alex Kane in the finals, 6-0, 6-4. The Binversie duo swept Jacob DeGroot and Sam Neuber of Kimberly in the title match, 6-0, 6-1. Gangano and Novak won all three of their matches to earn a share of first.

Primozic lost in the finals to Kimberly’s Alex Alt, a 2014 Division 1 state qualifier, 4-6, 2-6.

“We had a great invite. We have a young team in terms of varsity match play experience but they handled the pressure really well, with all our new guys winning their last matches of the day,” said Panther head coach Clare Sedlacek.

“At No. 1 doubles, Gabe and Gavin Binversie lost only five games – a great start to their season.”
