Panthers earn first win with shutout

KIEL – Plymouth won the possession battle to fuel a 2-0 girls soccer win over Kiel here Thursday evening.

The victory was the Panthers’ first this season after two one-goal losses and a tie. PHS improved to 1-0-1 in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference (1-2-1 overall).

PHS scored both of its goals within six minutes of each other in the first half. Junior midfielder Lizzy Francis booted the initial goal, assisted by sophomore forward Kalei Hering in the 27th minute. Junior forward Olivia Jankowski scored the second goal which was in the 33rd minute.

“I thought that we did a nice job maintaining possession throughout much of the game,” said Panther head coach Brad Feick.

“Lizzy did a nice job coming off the weak side to finish Hering’s pass. Olivia did well to extend the lead.

“Elizabeth Bolland [junior goalie] made a few key saves to keep the shutout. Kiel played hard and put pressure on our back line at times, especially late in the first and second halves,” said Feick.

PHS enjoyed a 12-5 advantage in shots on goal. Bolland was credited with five saves. Raider goalkeeper Alyssa Summer made eight.

“In past games we were often complacent, watching the ball. Against Kiel we were much crisper with our movement off the ball and providing defensive support,” Feick observed.

“Hannah Mauk, Carlee Olsen, Lizzy Francis, Brooke Toutloff, and Taylor Heyrman rotated the outside midfield positions. They kept the field wide and pressured Kiel’s defensive third whenever the ball was switched into space.

“Kalei Hering, Olivia Jankowski, Brooklin Willoughby, and Mathilde Marken-Smenes made penetrating runs as forwards. Jankowski was very active defending whenever possession was lost,” said the coach.

“Our defense – Kaitlyn Heyrman, Emily Majerus, Emily Meinnert and Brooke Frederickson with Danielle Roelse rotating in – played their best game of the season.”
