Cronyism

To the Editor,

I saw a promotion of Governor Walker’s budget that labeled WEDC and Wheda as “job cre- ation” agencies.

Surely it is the intent of Walker to streamline those agencies and eliminate government waste and I hope that he along with the legislature can pull it off.

It is the reference to WEDC and Wheda as “job creation” agencies that makes me skeptical. Usually involvement by the state creates government jobs or crony capitalist enterprises at expense of jobs and economic activity in the rest of the economy.

I believe that our politicians are looking toward Texas and some other states and assume that it is monetary incentives that convince companies to move businesses there.

The Texas program looks to be successful based upon the strength of its economy. On the contrary, it is likely the decision to move a company to Texas has more to do with transportation, availability of labor, raw materials, and suppliers, a business friendly environment or some other reason other than a government subsidy.

Dig a little deeper into Texas politics and you will see that those “job creation” programs come with the temptation of favoritism and actual accusations of abuse.

In Wisconsin, a partisan news media will make sure that the Walker administration will not show any favoritism when meting out subsidies.

Unfortunately, they will close their eyes to the next Democrat governor as they did with Governor Doyle.

Even with good oversight and conscientious administration, the look of cronyism cannot be avoided when subsidizing businesses.

Truth be told, there is no useful purpose for Wheda and WEDC beyond marketing our state, its resources, and its people to the world.

All of their other functions could be handled by tax paying enterprises but not without disturbing the pigs at the trough.
