Edge’s four goals fuel Tigers’ rout

RANDOM LAKE – Senior midfielder Morgan Edge exploded for four goals to spark the Howards Grove Tigers to a 9-1 pummeling of Random Lake in a girls soccer match here Thursday afternoon.

The Tigers raised their firstplace Central Lakeshore Conference record to 6-1 (7-2-1 overall).

HGHS dominated from the outset – seizing a 4-0 lead only 13 minutes into the match. Edge scored the first goal in the third minute, followed by goals from Kaitlynn Near and Brittany Schaller in the next four minutes, respectively.

Edge tallied the fourth goal in the 13th minute. Katie Guse gave HGHS a 5-0 halftime cushion with a goal in the 28th minute.

Edge scored two goals in the second half along with one each by Malayna McDaniel and Melissa Oxtoby. Schaller had a team-high three assists. Morgan Wittman, Emily Schmid and Carlie Stauss contributed one each.

The Tigers held an incredible 31-4 advantage in shots on goal. Olivia Stauss and Guse played goalie for HGHS. Stauss made two saves and Guse had one.

Samantha Rosso kicked the Rams’ goal.

“We clearly have a more experienced team and our starters got our scoring going early,” said Tiger head coach Kasey Smith.

“Morgan Edge clearly was aggressive to the goal tonight and it showed with her notching four goals with less than half the game played [by Edge]. She plays with the control and confidence you hope for from an experienced senior attacker.

“Brittany Schaller was also productive tonight with a goal and three assists. She constantly attacks and her speed is just a joy to watch. She goes as hard to the ball as any player I have ever coached, whether girls or boys,” Smith said.
