St. Lawrence musicians shine at state

The State Solo-Ensemble Competition was held at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Saturday April 25, with approximately 75 schools represented. John Ahlstrom, band and choir director at St. Lawrence Seminary, led 19 of the school’s most talented musicians, all of whom received an exceptionally high rating at the District Solo-Ensemble Festival

Solo-ensemble festivals are administered by the Wisconsin School Music Association and run by the host schools. They provide opportunities for students to perform alone or in small groups and have their performances evaluated by a judge.

“I took an exceptionally talented group of guys to state, and all of them performed about as well as they possibly could. I can’t ask for any more than that” said Ahlstrom. “All of our events received first- or second-place ratings. Three of our students were nominated for Exemplary Soloist awards, and two (Andrew Wolfe on flute and Joseph Min on clarinet) received the award, which means they were the best performers heard all day.

“It’s hard to stand out from the crowd when everybody else there performed as well at district festivals to get there - I told our students on the bus before the events started that nobody gets to state by accident, and that includes them - they had earned the right to participate” Alstrom added.
