JEROME (JERRY) ANTHONY QUELLA

Jerome (Jerry) Anthony Quella passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early morning hours of May 7, 2015 at the Plymouth Care Center where he was a resident for the past few weeks.

Jerry was born in Sherwood, WI on May 22, 1925 to Edward & Cornelia (Stommel) Quella.

Jerry attended school in Sherwood, WI during the Great Depression. This era forced Jerry into the workforce at the early age of 13 where he sold magazines in IN. Deciding this was not his life’s work, he hitchhiked home to the Fox River Valley area to work on a farm and then work at a golf course. Although he never did take up golf as a hobby, these early lawn care skills helped him take great pride in his lawn for as long as he could.

Jerry joined the Marines in 1943 and volunteered to become an amphibious tank operator. He was involved in a heroic effort in Iwo Jima where he earned a Bronze Star for his courage. During his time as a Marine his sister introduced him to a pen pal, Bernice Steers, who he married on April 12, 1947, one year after being discharged. They recently celebrated 68 years of marriage with their family.

Together with Bernice, they searched for the right business opportunity. After leaving the Fox River Valley, they moved to Plymouth, WI where they owned the Clark Gas Station. After several years, they purchased a small diner called The Den in Elkhart Lake, WI where they made their home across the street. They expanded the original diner in the mid 1960’s to become Q’s Quarters -- home of the famous Jerry’s Seasoning. Owning his own supper club meant long hours and long days thereby earning Jerry the nickname Grumpy, but those who stayed later into the evening saw Jerry smile and found that there was a big teddy bear under all that tough demeanor.

Beyond raising his children, which included 4 daughters and 2 sons, he was also involved with the Elkhart Lake Service Club and was recently recognized as a 50 Year member of the American Legion. After his retirement in 1995, Jerry served Meals on Wheels and volunteered his time at St. Vincent DePaul. Even after Jerry was homebound he continued helping St. Vincent De Paul by completing the children’s puzzles to check for all the pieces. In addition, Jerry was a long time member of St. George Catholic Church, now known as St. Thomas Aquinas in Elkhart Lake, WI, and was most recently a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Plymouth, WI.

Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Bernice; daughter Kathi (Earl) Wagner of Plymouth; son Paul (LuAnn Skelton) Quella of Madison; son Jay (Cathy Goetz) Quella of AZ and Canada; daughter Jodi Mann & special friend Mike Hasley of Mount Prospect, IL; daughter Karri (Todd) Neils of Plymouth.
