Tigers nearly pull off first-round upset

REEDSVILLE – The Howards Grove Tigers played one of their best games of the season but fell short in their upset bid against No. 2-seeded Reedsville, 3-1, in a Division 3 regional softball first-round game here Tuesday afternoon.

Sophomore Paige Splittgerber pitched an excellent game for the No. 2-seeded Tigers. She took the loss but allowed just two earned runs on seven hits with no strikeouts and only one walk in going the distance.

“We played a great game with Reedsville. They got a run on three consecutive hits in the second, two of which were bloop hits over second base,” said Tiger head coach Tom Heier whose team finished 6-21. ___ _ _ _–_

The Tigers scored their run on an RBI single by Alyssa Herwig in the top of the third inning. Herwig drove in Sarah Gardner who had doubled.

Gardner and Sydney Handel led HGHS in hits with two each.

“We couldn’t buy a break as we hit into two line-drive double plays to end innings,” said Heier.
