Flames earn first league victory

Matt Schroeder and Dave Stecker combined for a strong pitching performance and Jake Klemme had two RBIs to spark the Plymouth Flames past the Butler Bombers, 7-2, in Land O’ Lakes Baseball League play Sunday afternoon at Loebe Field in Plymouth.

The Flames, a Northern Division team, evened their league record at 1-1 and improved to 4-3 overall. Butler, in the Eastern Division, slipped to 2-1 in league play.

Schroeder was the winning pitcher and Stecker earned a save. Schroeder’s pitching line was two earned runs allowed on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts in six innings.

Stecker surrendered no runs and hits in his three innings of work. He walked three and fanned four.

Klemme’s two-run single keyed a three-run third which gave Plymouth a 4-1 lead.

The Flames had only five hits but drew seven walks and had three batters hit by pitches. Plymouth had no one with multiple hits. Matt Rhude and older brother, Greg, scored a team-high two runs each.

“It was a nice win. Butler is a team that was really strong in the past, but I had no scouting report on them coming into the game. It was nice to get our first win against a team from the old Eastern Division,” said Flame manager Rick Meyer.

Chris Teske paced the Bomb- ers in hits with two. Jacob Reetz was the starting and losing hurler. Reetz gave up four runs (two earned) on three hits with one walk, a strikeout and three hit batters.

The Flames played errorless defense while Butler committed three.

The Flames’ league game Monday at the West Bend Benders was postponed due to rain and has been rescheduled for June 25 at West Bend.

In nonleague action Friday night, the host Menasha Macs routed the Flames, 10-0. Plymouth was held to only two hits – one single each by Matt Rhude and Ryan Wachter.

Klemme started on the mound and took the loss. He allowed nine runs (five earned) on 11 hits with two walks and four whiffs in five innings.

Adam Grambon had a teamhigh three hits for the Macs.
