Knepfel, Schubert lead Resorters to state

PRINCETON – Senior Logan Knepfel and sophomore Sonia Schubert qualified for state in two individual events apiece to lead the Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah boys and girls teams, respectively, at the Division 3 sectional meet here Friday.

The top-four finishers in each sectional event automatically qualify for the state meet which will be held Friday and Saturday at UW-La Crosse’s Memorial Stadium.

Knepfel advanced in the 110-meter high hurdles and 200 dash with second- and thirdplace finishes, respectively. Schubert earned state berths in the long jump with a winning performance of 17-8½ and the 100 high hurdles with a runnerup finish. Schubert broke her own school record in the long jump.

Emily Holzmann of Elkhart also advanced to state in the 100 highs with a third-place showing. The Resorters’ other state qualifiers, all in the girls competition, are the 400 and 800 relays as they placed second and fourth, respectively, with school-record times.

The 400 relay included Holzmann, Camrie Schmitz, Lauren Boos and Schubert. The 800 relay consisted of Holzmann, Eliza Meyers, Schubert and Schmitz.

“Our athletes took their level of competition to a new level. Logan Knepfel worked hard to get to this point and he took full advantage of his hard work and talent tonight,” said Resorter head coach Chris Petrie.

“The girls had a record-breaking night. Sonia had a great performance in the long jump, using her final jump to retake the lead and reestablish the school record. Holzmann and Schubert both broke the 16-second mark for the first time in the 100 hurdles to qualify.

“This is a group of competitors and I know they are ready to take on the challenge at the state meet,” said Petrie about his state qualifiers.
