Bagnall leads to Tigers to regional crown

SHEBOYGAN – Sophomore Matt Bagnall was the runner-up medalist in leading the Howards Grove Tigers to the Division 3 boys regional golf championship Wednesday at the Town & Country Golf Club.

The Tigers had a strong team effort as they placed three golfers in the top-seven overall. HGHS shot an 18-hole score of 343, followed by Mishicot with 349, Sheboygan Lutheran at 354 and Kohler, 357.

The top-four teams in the regional advance to the sectional Tuesday, June 2 at the Whispering Springs Golf Course, just east of Fond du Lac. The tee time is scheduled for 9 a.m.

Bagnall carded an 82 which in- cluded a 42 on the front nine and a 40 on the back nine. The medalist was Austin Schnell of Mishicot with a 79.

The Tigers’ other low players were juniors Collin Meyer and Jonny Probst who tied for fifth with Lutheran’s Isaiah Richardson at 86, and junior Layne Gustafson who was in a seven-way tie for 13th with an 89.

The Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Resorters finished ninth in the 10-team tournament with 391. Elkhart’s low players were Elliot Van Oss and Max Ward with 93s, Dante Miller, 100 and Anthony Klahn, 105.

“It was great for the team to win regionals. They played very well and consistent,” said Tiger head coach Chris Hirt.

“They did not make any large mistakes and played one shot at a time.

“We are extremely excited to be able to play in sectionals. I’m looking forward to seeing how well we will fare.

“We know it will be tough but excited nonetheless. All we can do is play our own game and add up the scores at the end,” said Hirt.

Lutheran was led by sophomore Josh Splittgerber who earned third with an 84. Kohler’s top player was sophomore Charlie Twohig who captured fourth with an 85.
