Youth summer reading program promoted

Get ready to be carried away with reading this summer. Visit the bookmobile when it stops in your neighborhood to register for the Summer Reading program. Summer read Enrollment will remain open through June and July to allow families to adapt the program to their summer schedules.

Young children, Read-to- Me participants can do bi-weekly activities and earn reading motivations for every 3 hours of being read to, up to a total of 15 hours, until the program ends on July 31. This program is mainly for children ages 2- 5.

Children, who are reading, ICan Read participants, can do bi-weekly “hero” activities on the bookmobile and will earn reading motivations for every 3, 6, and 9 hours of reading. After 12 hours of reading they can enter a drawing for larger rewards. This program is mainly for children ages 5 - 12.

To keep track of your summer reading, cross off or circle a symbol on your reading time sheet for every 15 minutes that your child has read or been read to, a line of circles for the Read-to-Me participants equals 3 hours of reading. A line for the I-Can-Read- participants equals 3 hours of reading. Read-to-Me participants can read up to 15 hours and receive 5 rewards.

After reading a line, parents or caregivers should initial the sheet. You may bring it to the bookmobile after completing one line or an entire sheet. For your convenience reading rewards can be claimed each time you visit the bookmobile or before the end of the program, July 31. Beginning rewards include Pizza Hut coupons and free passes to the Milwaukee Public Museum and Planetarium.

There is a special program for teens ages 13 – 17. Get into reading this summer and learn about the many heroes there are.
