Fritz fires shutout for undefeated Tigers

OOSTBURG – Senior Zach Fritz outdueled Lukas Meerdink as the Howards Grove Tigers edged Oostburg, 1-0, in baseball action here Friday evening.

The Tigers hiked their Central Lakeshore Conference record to 4-0 (5-0 overall). The Flying Dutchmen dropped to 2-2 in the CLC (3-4 overall).

Fritz, who is unbeaten in his high school career, allowed only three hits to go with zero walks and three strikeouts. Meerdink took a tough loss as he twirled a one-hitter, gave up three walks and recorded six strikeouts.

Senior Bryce Hoffmann knocked in the winning run with a two-out double in the bottom of the sixth inning which plated Fritz. Fritz led off the inning and was hit by a pitch. He moved to second base on Dakota Rabe’s sacrifice bunt and took third on Andrew Reinemann’s groundout.

“Zach Fritz is such a solid senior player and Hoffmann stepped up as well, getting the key hit. It’s what champions do,” said Tiger head coach Mark Weber.
