EL-G Middle School Geography Bee

During the first weeks of January, all fifth- through eight-grade students at the Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Middle School took part in a classroom Geography Bee, put on by the National Geographic Society each year to “ increase and diffuse geographic knowledge.” Each classroom then sent one finalist to the Middle School bee.

Shown with coordinator Annalee Bennin (left) are the eight students who moved on to the finals Jan. 15: (left to right) Meghan Clemens, Rachael Flora, Kayla Theel, Jacob Starnitchky, Stephen Clemens, Adam Kuhn, Ethan Hau and Jake Shovan.

After numerous rounds of challenging questions, the final two contestants – Kuhn and Hau – remained. They were then asked three questions. Hau had the highest score and was crowned Geography Bee Champion, his second year as champion.

His next step was to take a 70 question test that then gets sent to the National Geographic Society. In the next couple of months, Hau will learn where he ranks nation-wide and if he will compete in the national competition.
