Counselors bring summer to life

The goofy, fun and well-qualified counselors at Camp Y-Koda in Sheboygan Falls have started the 2015 summer camp season with a bang.

The 2015 counselor team consists of some of the best and brightest local and out-of-state college students who are dedicated to making a difference in children’s lives and in the community this summer.

While for many it really starts to feel like summer around the July 4th holiday, counselors began preparing for the summer camp season more than a month before that. Staff members are certified in First Aid, CPR, lifeguarding and shaken baby syndrome prevention, and have met training standards set by the state of Wisconsin for day care licensing.

Counselors took part in two weeks of intensive training prior to the start of camp, then spent the first week of camp pairing up with each new counselor working alongside a returning counselor.

During training, counselors experienced the activities that they now lead campers in, while building relationships with one another and learning games and activities that help children do the same. They sang silly songs-in the sun and in the rain.

They got to know camp the way campers do when they feel like they belong and are a part of a special camper community. They have set personal summer goals and learned ways to help campers set and achieve theirs.

Just before the start of camp, counselors invited assistant counselor volunteers to join them in a traditional campfire cookout, along with teambuilding and leadership games and activities.

The assistant counselor volunteers make camp run smoothly and follow in the footsteps of the counselors. Some of the current counselors were volunteers themselves at one time, and before that, campers. These young adults have grown to love camp and are great role models to kids, as they exemplify the Y values of respect, responsibility, honesty and caring.

Camp Y-Koda Summer Camp is the place for summer youth development.

Into the third week of summer camp, each new counselor has had the opportunity to lead a group of campers and show them the camp experience of a lifetime. Openings are available each week of summer through the end of August.
