New food class for kids

Plymouth School District Community Education and Recreation is offering a new class to get kids in the garden, and a third session of Generations aquatic classes.

Kids! Who’s Your Farmer?: Students age 8 and up are invited to join some garden fun to learn where our food comes from. Try a new vegetable, search for a bug, plant a seed, and discover and observe all that grows in the school garden. Students will be outdoors, with adventures to the local farmers market (within walking distance). Participants may bring a lunch if they wish.

Class will meet with instructor Jessica Mella, district nutrition and wellness coordinator, from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursdays Aug. 13 and 20 in the garden at Plymouth High School, 125 Highland Ave.; fee is $5 until July 31, then $15 (some financial assistance is available).

Community Ed & Rec also is offering a third session of aquatic classes in conjunction with the Plymouth Adult Community Center and taught by Fred Brown and staff in the PHS pool. Available from Aug. 10 to 21 are:

Adult Swim Lessons: Lessons are offered from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; fee is $24 until July 31, then $34.

Aquatic Rehab Class: The buoyancy and resistance of water challenges the body while easing strain on problematic areas. The program is designed for seniors but open to all. Exercises are in shallow water, so no swimming skills are needed. Class will meet from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; there is no fee, but pre-registration is required by July 31.

SilverSneakers Splash: This class requires no swimming ability but offers fun, shallow-water movement to improve agility and flexibility while addressing cardiovascular, strength and endurance conditioning. SilverSneakers kickboard or other aquatic equipment will improve strength, balance and coordination. This class is open only to Silver Sneakers and Generations members. Classes will meet from 9 to 9:45 a.m. and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; there is no fee, but pre-registration is required by July 31.
