Plymouth heads off Falls to reach state tourney

Plymouth (23-7) advanced to state for the second straight year with victory. Falls ended its season at 16-15 overall.

The Panthers opened the game with five big runs in the second inning off the Falcons starting pitcher John VanderPloeg.

Plymouth loaded the bases to start the inning with walk to Matt Olig, single by Drew Schweiger and Jake Steinhardt singled.

Olig was thrown out a home on a fielder’s choice by Derek Schweigerto reload the bases.

TJ Moegenburg waled to drive in the first run. Tyler Willeford hit a two run single and Zac Cain’s tworun single made the score 5-0.

Panthers starting pitcher Derek Schweiger breezed through the first four innings, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts.

The Falcons broke up the shutout in the fifth inning when Sean Mattek and Connor O’Dwanny hit back-to-back singles. Both runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Another wild pitch by

Schweiger gave Falls its first run to make the score 5-1.

Plymouth added a run in the fifth inning when Drew Schweiger scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 6-1.

Ploeg after one out in the fifth struggled the Panthers tacked on two more runs. in the sixth as

Krist gave up two unearned runs after loading the bases on a dropped flyball to the outfield. A two-RBI by Steinhardt gave Plymouth an 8-1 lead.

The Falcons looked to rally in the seventh as they scored four runs to cut the lead to 8-5.

Mattek and O’Dwanny singled after one out. Lucas Kaland picn ran for O’Dwanny.

After a walks to Joe Van Engen and Ryan Schmitt, Mattek scored. Krist added a three RBI double.

VanderPloeg took the loss pitching 4.1 innings, giving up six runs on five hits with five walks and struck out four. Krist gave up two runs on a hit and three walkswith one strikeout in relief.

Mattek and O’Dwanny led Falls with two hits each. Mattek scored two runs.

Derek Schweiger picked up the win, giving up five runs on six hits, two walks with nine strikeouts and two hit batters.
