Heidenreiter, Klemme key Flames’ rout

GRAFTON – Eric Heidenreiter’s bat and Jake Klemme’s arm propelled the Plymouth Flames to a 10-2 drubbing of the Grafton Express in Land O’ Lakes Baseball League Northern Division play here Saturday afternoon.

The win clinched a firstround bye in the divisional playoffs for the Flames who improved to 10-5 in the league (17-8 overall). Plymouth has wrapped up second place in the North. Grafton fell to 5-11 in the LOL.

Heidenreiter had a teamhigh three hits and three RBIs. He also walked twice as he reached base five times in five plate appearances. Heidenreiter’s two-run double in the ninth capped off the Flames’ scoring.

Klemme raised his record to 4-1 with a complete-game win. He allowed two earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and only one walk.

The Flames spotted Grafton a 2-0 lead in the first inning and then answered with a six-run explosion in the top of the third to build a 6-2 lead. Plymouth sent 11 batters to the plate in the frame and banged out six hits. Luke Held ripped an RBI double and Matt Rhude, Dusty Medved and Heidenreiter contributed run-scoring singles. Greg Rhude and Greg Krahn added sacrifice flies.

Plymouth pounded out 12 hits and had eight batters with at least one hit. Held and Klemme chipped in with two hits each. Greg Rhude and Medved had two RBIs apiece. Matt Rhude scored a team-high two runs.

Max Pruefer and Taylor Devenport keyed Grafton’s attack with three hits each.

Express starting pitcher Nate Koehler took the loss. Koehler gave up eight runs (all earned) on 10 hits with six walks, one hit batter and five strikeouts in seven innings.
