Gilbert Mertes, 87, of Sheboygan entered into eternal life on Monday, August 10, 2015 at Golden Living Center in Sheboygan.

Gilbert was born October 26, 1927 in Sheboygan. He was the son of the late Raymond and Elva Glass Mertes. On August 14, 1948 he was united in marriage to Virginia Roelse in Sheboygan, WI. The couple was married for 66 years.

Gilbert served one and half years (March 1946 to August 1947) in the army during which he was stationed in South Korea.

Through his church family he was known as the “Handyman”.

He worked for (Plenco) Plastics Engineering Company. His duties included Molder, Boiler Tender and Boiler Operator from October 9, 1950 to January 1, 1993 when he retired as a Boiler Operator.

He is survived by sons: Bob (Pat), Plymouth, Jim (friend Betty), Sheboygan; and daughter: Betty (John) Grothe, Plymouth; eight grandchildren: Fran O’Brien, Kim (Brian) Kotlowski, T.J., Shelley, Karrie, Kris Mertes, Donna (John) Jolley, and Leslie (Matt) Sanzo; twelve great-grandchildren: Kaylee, Carson, Kayla, Stephani, Jacob, Dayton, Kyle, Katie, Spencer, Shawn, Matthew, and Shylynn; two great-great grandchildren: Shana and Brantly; one sister: Gladys (Toots) Sargent; one brother: Aaron “Butch” (Shirley) Mertes; sistersin law: Kathy, Louise, Kim, Catherine, Dorothy (Brad) Canterbury, Diane; brothers-in-law: Donald and Edwin Roelse; many cousins, nieces and nephews in Canada and the United States.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, his in laws: Gillis and Pieternella Roelse, three brothers, a sister, five brothers-in-law, and five sisters-in-law.

Visitation will be held at First Reformed Church in Sheboygan Falls, 527 Giddings Avenue Saturday August 15th from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Funeral service will be held 11am Saturday at the church with Pastor Brad Veenendaal officiating. Burial will take place at Greenlawn Memorial Park in the town of Sheboygan on Monday August 17 at 9:30 a.m. with military honors by VFW Post # 9156 of Sheboygan.

A memorial fund has been established in Gilbert’s “Whitey” name for The Gathering Place and First Reformed Church.
