Falls’ Schlecht earns USTA Scholarship

LEIGH SCHLECT LEIGH SCHLECT USTA Foundation, the national charitable foundation of the United States Tennis Association (USTA), has selected Leigh Schlect of Sheboygan Falls, who recently graduated from Kohler High School, as the recipient of the $15,000 Marian Wood Baird Scholarship.

This past spring, the USTA Foundation granted 53 high school students a variety of college scholarships, totaling $373,000.

The USTA Foundation strives to encourage students to pursue their goals and highest dreams by succeeding in school and becoming responsible citizens.

“The USTA Foundation is once again excited to award these hardworking, well-deserving seniors,” said Dan Faber, USTA Foundation executive director. “We are proud to contribute to their academic achievements, and look forward to their continued success.”

Schlect, 18, was a National Merit semifinalist.

While attending Kohler High School, where she participated tennis and track and field, Schlect also served as co-captain of the math team, earned a perfect score at State Forensics three years in a row, and is a published poet.

Some of her other extracurricular activities include tutoring children in Spanish, French and math, while also maintaining a part-time job.

Schelct will attend Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. this fall where she plans to double major in creative writing and comparative literature.

Bestowed upon one high school senior who has excelled academically, demonstrated achievements in leadership, and participated extensively in an organized community tennis program, the Marian Wood Baird Scholarship was created by the Baird family and named in honor of the late Marian Wood Baird, who had been recognized by the USTA for more than 40 years of volunteer service.
