UW-S to exhibit inmate art

The University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan Fine Arts Gallery invites the community to visit the campus for the latest Fine Arts Gallery art exhibition, Loss and Grief: Featuring Drawings from Local Inmates. An opening reception is planned for Thursday, September 17 from 5 to 8 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. The show runs September 3 through October 30.

The exhibition is sponsored by Lake Shore Reentry (LSR), a local non-profit charitable organization. In conjunction with LSR's goals to engage in community outreach and to advocate for the needs of pre- and post-release inmates as well as their families and service providers, Sharon Abel offered to coordinate a community-wide art exhibit series showcasing artwork by local adult inmates. This is a volunteer endeavor for Abel, who is an Instructor with Lakeshore Technical College. Her primary responsibility with LTC is the adult basic skills education program in Sheboygan County.

The chosen theme, Loss and Grief, goes beyond the loss of loved ones. The incarcerated artists also explore the loss of home, freedom, memory and self-control. The hope is to create community conversation and increase awareness of services addressing the needs of those who are grieving and suffering with loss.

The UW-Sheboygan Fine Arts Gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
