Well water testing offered in Herman, Mosel by UW-Extension

The Sheboygan County University of Wisconsin-Extension Office has teamed up with the Sheboygan County Planning and Conservation Department and the certified lab at UW-Stevens Point to offer a drinking water testing program for residents of the towns of Herman and Mosel who obtain their water from a private well.

This is not a DNR program. Poor test results will not require a well to be shut down.

For a $15 fee (normally $49), well owners can participate in the “Homeowners Package,” which includes tests for bacteria and nitrate-nitrogen, two of the most common health related water concerns. In addition, pH, hardness, alkalinity, conductivity, chloride, and corrosivity will also be measured.

Other test packages will also be available, including a “Metals Package” that tests for arsenic, lead, and nine other metals ($20), and a “Triazine Screen” that tests for atrazine pesticides ($27).

Sample bottle pickup will be coordinated by UW-Extension staff at the Herman Town Hall in Franklin, N8139 Franklin Rd., Friday, Sept. 11 any time between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. or Saturday, Sept. 12 between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Each participant will be given instructions for sampling his or her well water and will need to return the sample bottle to UW-Extension staff at the Town Hall Monday, Sept. 14 sometime between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Payment will be expected at bottle pickup.

Additional hours are available at the Mosel Town Hall in Haven, W982 County FF.

Sample bottle pickup will be Friday, Sept. 11 anytime between 1:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. or Saturday, Sept. 12 between 8 and 10 a.m.

Participants can also return the sample bottle to the Mosel Town Hall Monday, Sept. 14 anytime between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.

On an evening in October yet to be determined, a groundwater specialist from the UW-Stevens Point lab will hold a brief educational session in the area to help residents understand their confidential test results and offer possible solutions to any problems.
