State 23/32 interchange work begins

Summer may be ending, but road construction season is heating up in Sheboygan County.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation regional office in Green Bay has announced the start of another state highway project in Sheboygan County.

Work has begun at the State 23/32 interchange to replace concrete pavement along with curb and gutter at the interchange westbound onramp to State 23 to accommodate oversized/overweight vehicles. A red concrete truck apron will be placed on the back side of the curb and gutter.

This week, the contractor will install erosion control and traffic control measures. Pavement removals will begin on the south side of the ramp, followed by excavation and grading operations.

All State 32 through lanes and the westbound State 23 on-ramp will remain open to traffic. The northbound median turn lane onto westbound State 23 ramp will be closed for about two weeks.

Meanwhile, work continues on two projects on State 67 in the city of Plymouth.

At the intersection of State 67 and County PP, pavement removals will continue this week. Shaping of the ditch along the west side of State 67 will also continue. Fire hydrants will be relocated outside of the roadway clear zone. Erosion controls will be installed north of the intersection at South Hills Drive to South River Drive along both sides of State 67.

The $848,000, 0.75-mile rural reconstruction and resurfacing of the intersection of State 67 and County PP and from County PP to South River Drive involves two contracted projects: the reconstruction of the intersection at State 67 and County PP/Hill and Dale Road and the mill and overlay of State 67 from County PP northward to South River Drive.

The work on these projects, scheduled for completion in mid-October, includes pavement removals, asphalt pavement, culvert pipe, storm sewer, curb and gutter, beam guard, signing, pavement marking and erosion control.

State 67 traffic is being detoured on County ZZ, County Z, County C, and State 23 while work is being performed at the intersection of State 67 and County PP.

Mill and overlay work along State 67 from just north of County PP to South River Drive is not anticipated to begin until mid-September and will be open to local traffic entering from the north for the duration of the project.

On State 67 from the Mullet River to Suhrke Road, the contractor will continue removing pavement and placing base material this week. Weather permitting the crew should complete a good portion of the grading by week’s end. On Friday the contractor will observe the Labor Day holiday restrictions.

The 0.84-mile, $3.18 million urban reconstruction project, scheduled for completion in November, involves reconstruction of State 67 from the Mullet River to Suhrke Road, resurfacing and repairs to the Mullet River bridge, and water utility, storm sewer and sanitary sewer reconstruction along with new concrete pavement.

State 67 is closed to through traffic during construction. Access to local businesses and properties will be maintained. However, several of the side roads to State 67 (North Milwaukee Street) will be closed as work progresses. Residents can utilize Edna and Grove Street to cross State 67 and Krumrey Street to access Marshner and Braun Streets. Alternate access will be maintained as work continues north. The Main Street intersection will remain open to residents and business access only.

Through traffic will be detoured using County C and WIS 23.

The contractor will complete deck removal and continue to work on widening the abutments on State 28 (14th Street bridge) in the city of Sheboygan this week.

Work consists of bridge deck replacement, pavement replacement and street lighting.

State 28 (14th Street) is closed to all traffic between Niagara Avenue and Ontario Avenue. The detour uses Indiana Avenue, Taylor Drive, Kohler Memorial Drive and Erie Avenue.

Motorists are advised to use caution and remain alert when driving through any work zone.

Drivers are also encouraged to seek information about work zones and detours in the following ways:
