Refugee’s plight staged by TYA

Theater For Young Audiences’ Rising Stars Youth Theater Troupe announces auditions for “ANON(ymous) ” for youngsters entering grades five through twelve this fall.

Winner of the New Voices New Visions award, this is the story of a young refugee’s valiant efforts to find one’s home and identity. ANON encounters kindness and cruelty along the journey thru alleys, tunnels, highways, and ocean waves.

The production is designed and staged by a team of youths under the supervision of TYA’s technical director Savannah M. Lewis and guest instructors Hannah Benton and Erin Smiley.

Stage directors Sara Bartol and Hannah Staats together with choreographer Karen Attipoe seek an ethnically-diverse ensemble to play up to 22 roles that include ANON, Nemasani (mother), Mr. Mackus (sewing factory owner), Strygal (trucker illegally hauling refugees), Senator Laius and wife Helen , Calista (luxury island inhabitant), Nice American Father, Mother and Daughter, Ritu, Nasreen, and Ali (owners of a neighborhood restaurant), Belen (a migrant seeking help), Ignacio (Belen’s deceased father), Naja (a goddess) and an ensemble of Sewing Ladies, Dancing Girls and Refugees.

Auditions will be held at TYA’s Theater Factory, 1305 St. Clair Ave., Sheboygan by appointment Wednesday, Sept. 2 at 5 and 6 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 3 at 5 p.m.

Registrants will read from the script and engage in movement in small groups during the 50-minute audition sessions. All must reside or attend school in Sheboygan County or the Kiel school district.

Scripts are available for inhouse review only at Mead and Plymouth libraries.

Callbacks by invitation will be held Thursday, Sept. 3 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Parents will provide some technical support and are required to assist with hospitality and strike.

Cast members will rehearse as needed Monday through Thursdays from 5 - 8:30 p.m. and Fridays from 4 - 6 p.m. beginning Sept. 9. Technical rehearsal will be held Friday, Oct. 2 from 4:30 - 8:30 p.m. Commitment is directly proportional to the number of episodes one’s character appears in.

Performances will be given Oct. 8-11 for schools and the public at TYA’s Theater Factory.

The general meeting for the parents, cast and team will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8. The participation fee will be collected at that time.
