Raymond G. “Ray” Franda, 81, of Elkhart Lake, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 2, 2015, at St. Mary’s hospital Mayo Clinic with his wife and children by his side.

Ray was born on December 15, 1933 in Brussels, WI, son of the late George and Vera (Vogel) Franda.

He attended grade school in Brussels and graduated from Brussels High School.

Ray attended UW-River Falls for three years, before joining the United States Army.

He served our country for two years during the Korean War, including one year in Germany.

After his service, he returned to UWRiver Falls to earn his degree in Agriculture. It was during his final year of college when he met the love of his life, Judy Whistler.

In 1957, he married Judy in Glenwood City, WI. The couple moved to Elkhart Lake following their marriage.

Ray taught agriculture and industrial arts at Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah High School for nine years. He also was an assistant coach for football and basketball. He was instrumental in starting the high school’s FFA program.

Following teaching, Ray worked as a salesman for Wayne Feeds until his retirement.

He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Elkhart Lake where he served on the Parish Council and as an usher.

Ray proudly served for many years on the Elkhart Lake Volunteer Fire Department.

He was also a member of the VFW Badger Tri-County Post #6707 in Kiel.

Ray was passionate about cutting wood, also enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, reading, going to the cabin up north, going to the family farm in Door County, morning coffee with his pals at All Seasons Restaurant, Tuesday meetings playing cards with his retired fire fighter buddies. But most of all he was proud of his loving family and was grateful to be able to share his last weekend with them.

He is survived by the love of his life: Judy of Elkhart Lake; five children: Susan (Jeffrey) Bartsch of Plover, Peggy (Donald) Hester of Wenatchee, WA, Rick (Chris) Franda of Brillion, Debi (Dan) Heimann of Elkhart Lake, and Tony (Jennifer) Franda of Pewaukee; seven grandchildren: Austin Bartsch, Kristin (Eric) Kroening, Wesley Hester, David Heimann (Special friend: Ashley England), Trevor, Ryan, and Ian Franda; two step-grandchildren: Aaron (Coriene) Ploetz and Melissa Ploetz; Great Grandpa’s three “littlest froggies”: Alicia, Jacob and Alexis; three step-greatgrandchildren: Avery, Connor, and Victoria; one brother: Robert (Joanne) Franda of Green Bay; two sisters: Jeanette (Leonard) Klappauf of Racine and Delores (Bernard) Pierre of Green Bay; and one brother-inlaw: Lou Neuville of Waupaca.

He is also survived by many special nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Ray was escorted home by his loving granddaughter, Tori, where he was also met by his parents and his sister, Theresa Neuville, who preceded him in death.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, September 8, 2015, at 11:00 A.M. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Elkhart Lake. Father Dan Volkert, pastor of the Church officiated. Burial will take place at St. Thomas Aquinas North Cemetery in the Town of Rhine. The VFW Badger Tri-County Post #6707 will conduct military rites following the services.

Visitation took place on Monday, September 7, 2015 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Elkhart Lake from 4:00-7:00 P.M. and again on Tuesday, September 8, from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in Ray’s name for the Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah High School F.F.A. Chapter.
