County officials attend convention

County elected officials from Sheboygan County recently attended the Wisconsin Counties Association (WCA) Annual Conference Sept. 20-22 in La Crosse County.

This year’s conference focused on the diverse and complex issues currently facing counties around the state, and was held at the La Crosse Center and the Radisson Hotel La Crosse.

The WCA Annual Conference hosted concurrent workshops and featured sessions included such topics as addressing racial disparities in the criminal justice system, funding transportation in the future and the future of long-term care in Wisconsin.

Speakers included Sallie Clark, president, National Association of Counties; U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (via a short video); Cathy Sandeen, chancellor, University of Wisconsin Colleges and UW-Extension; Richard Klemme, dean and director, UW-Extension and Cooperative Extension; and Jennifer Schilling, minority leader, Wisconsin State Senate.

In addition to breakout sessions and featured speakers, several Sheboygan County supervisors, along with County Board Chair Roger TeStroete, participated in the WCA annual business meeting.

Representatives from member counties were invited to participate in the event, in which resolutions were voted on that will be placed in the WCA platform.

The Wisconsin County Clerk Association’s (WCCA) fall conference, also in La Crosse, ran concurrent to the WCA event. County Clerk Jon Dolson attended the WCCA event and portions of the WCA event.

“The WCA Annual Conference is a wonderful opportunity to network with our peers from around the state and hear from experts on all the complex issues facing counties,” said TeStroete. “Now more than ever, it is a huge benefit to hear what’s been working for other counties, discuss possible solutions to our shared issues and bring home fresh perspectives that will help us guide our counties into the future.”

The Wisconsin Counties Association represents the interests of county governments at both the state and federal levels and is located in Madison, Wisconsin. Learn more at www.wicounties.org.
