Huskies defeat Falls, stay atop league race

New Holstein/Elkhart Lake- Glenbeulah overcame injuries to defeat Sheboygan Falls, 3-1, in a hard-fought boys soccer match Thursday afternoon.

The Huskies raised their Eastern Wisconsin/Packerland Conference record to 6-0 (9-0-5 overall). NH/EL-G is tied for first with Sturgeon Bay. Falls dropped to 3-3 in the league (3-6 overall).

Tyler Schultz, Jacob Starnitcky and Max Kossman – all EL-G students – scored one goal each for the Huskies, with Kossman’s on a penalty kick. Jacob Conrad and Noah Ruh (EL-G student) had one assist apiece.

Austin Martinez kicked the Falcons’ goal.

NH/EL-G led 18-4 in shots on goal. Husky goalkeeper Stephan Clemens (EL-G student) made three saves.

“It was a rough game for us tonight. We ended up with three people out with head injuries by the end of the game, and had every healthy body in there at the end,” said Husky co-head coach Nate Laabs.

“We could not get anything going for most of the game and our passing and teamwork was just not there. But in the end we were able to do enough to pull out the victory and keep our conference record perfect.”

Schultz’s goal in the 56th minute broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Huskies a 2-1 win over visiting St. Lawrence Seminary (Mount Calvary) in a nonconference game Monday night. Conrad had the assist.

The Huskies upped their record to 10-1-5. Josue Valenzuela scored the Huskies’ other goal on an assist by Clemens.

The Hilltoppers’ goal was scored by Isai Luevano.

The Hilltoppers held a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Clemens was credited with four saves.

“It was a very well-played game tonight by both teams. We came into the game a little banged up but I was very impressed with how everyone played,” said Laabs.

“It was tough coming off our first loss this weekend [1-0 at Plymouth on Saturday] but we rebounded extremely well and showed some great character tonight.”
