Tigers stay in hunt for Big East championship

HOWARDS GROVE – The Howards Grove Tigers remained one point behind first-place Sheboygaan Christian/Lutheran in the Big East Conference boys soccer championship race with a 4-1 win over Random Lake here Tuesday afternoon.

The Tigers upped their BEC record to 10-1-1 (13-4-2 overall). Christian/Lutheran, 11-1, leads second-place HGHS 22-21 in the point standings (two points per win and one per tie). Both teams have two matches left in league play. The Eagles edged HGHS, 3-2, in the teams’ other meeting this season.

The SC/L Eagles defeated Oostburg, 3-0, on Tuesday in BEC play.

HGHS took a 3-1 halftime lead over the Rams on one goal each by Jeremy Berglund, Peter Grimm and Devin Gallenberger, respectively. Berglund’s goal gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead only 4:41 into the game. William Rautmann scored the Tigers’ second-half goal.

Ben Dehne, Gallenberger and Berglund had one assist each.

Zachary Ross scored the Rams’ goal which made it 3-1.

The Tigers held an impressive 21-5 advantage in shots in goal. HGHS goalkeeper Hunter Voss made four saves. Ram goalie Evan DeBroux had 17 saves.

“We came out in control from the start as we wanted to take care of business tonight with the hopes that Oostburg would have knocked off Sheboygan Christian/Lutheran [an Oostburg win would have put HGHS in first place],” said Tiger head coach Kasey Smith.

“Scoring started early when Ben Dehne followed up on a shot and found Berglund wide open in front of the net. It was a great pass and Dehne made a great effort to get us started.

“From there we controlled the shot count and got goals from Peter Grimm, Gallenberger, and freshman William Rautmann,” said Smith.
