Panthers win Wrightstown Invitational

WRIGHTSTOWN – The Plymouth Panthers won the Wrightstown Girls Volleyball Invitational Saturday with a 25- 17, 25-16 win over Hilbert in the championship match.

Sophie Albert led the PHS attack with six kills and Megan Goeser had four. Albert also had a team-high four ace serves. Goeser led in solo blocks with four.

Elizabeth Baus paced the Panthers in digs with five. Jessica Schumacher led in assists with nine. Baus was first in serve reception with 14-for-14.

“A spectacular way to finish the tournament for us. Hilbert has really developed a strong program the last few years with state representation and really good teams,” said PHS head coach Peggy Huhn.

“They are a strong squad. We did an incredible job on shutting down their big gun [April Gehl]. She is a great player but we really tried to attack her on our serving and also with our block, and did a good job [with both]. We were also able to keep our own errors at a minimum.”

Gehl led the Wolves in kills with six. Emma Zahringer had a team-high six assists.

“Sophie Albert had a great game with six kills of 16 attempts and no errors. Elizabeth Baus was picking up everything in the back row,” said Huhn.

“Megan Goeser really controlled the net and had four solo blocks and three assist blocks.

“Skyler Gosse also had a good game [match] for us as well. She has really started to come along.”

The Panthers advanced to the finals with a 25-21, 25-19 victory over Weyuawega-Fremont in the semifinals. Goeser and Albert keyed the PHS offense with eight kills each.

Plymouth’s other statistical leaders in the semifinals included: ace serves – Jordyn Thomas, two; solo blocks – Albert, three; digs – Baus, five; assists – Schumacher, 11; and serve reception – Baus, 18-for-19.

The Panthers finished 5-1 overall in the tournament. PHS downed Sheboygan North in the quarterfinals, 25-27, 25-22, 15- 10. In pool play, PHS defeated St. Mary Catholic (Neenah), 25-17, 25-16; and lost to Wrightstown, 23-25, 28-30. The Panthers beat Sturgeon Bay in a pool cross-over match, 25-19, 25-10.
