Free business counseling available in county

The business startup, retention, and expansion efforts at the Sheboygan County Economic Development Corporation (SCEDC) have already resulted in several successes to date.

To expand upon that success the SCEDC is announcing new strategic alliance with Southeast Wisconsin’s Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE).

As part of this partnership, Sheboygan County residents will have the opportunity to receive small business counseling at no cost from a certified SCORE business mentor beginning October 1, 2015.

SCEDC launched entrepreneurial support last year through an alignment with the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at UWGreen Bay and to date several projects have been funded.

Still other existing businesses including Goodside Grocery, Black Pig Restaurant, Bumps Bar & Grill, and Dollhouse Dance Factory have benefited from consultation sessions that are geared toward improving successful business acquisition or expansion.

To date, nearly 100 individual sessions have been held throughout Sheboygan County resulting in job creation and investment.

“Our alignment with the SBDC has produced tremendous results for new and expanding mom and pop and medium-sized businesses,” said SCEDC’s Director, Dane Checolinski. “Well-planned businesses are more likely to thrive and we are excited to expand our capacity with SCORE to provide additional entrepreneurial support to Sheboygan County residents by doubling our capacity to assist more local business owners. Now people wishing to start or expand a business have one phone number and email address to know in order to get started.”

“SCORE’s primary goal is to help clients succeed, whether they have been in business for some time or are just getting started,” says Dave Maaske, certified mentor and chapter chair of SCORE SE Wisconsin. “Today small business makes up nearly half of the employment in the U.S., so by joining forces with the SCEDC, we are expanding our reach to help even more companies get through the challenges and meet success.”

Examples of consultation include business plan development, manufacturing capacity and sales process improvement, financial packaging and lending assistance, exporting and importing support, selling or purchasing a business, procurement and contracting aid, and market research.

Anyone interested in starting or purchasing a business, or currently operating a business that is a good candidate for expansion should contact SCEDC at 920-452-2350 or by email: Schuessler@Sheboygan-
