Panthers win battle of top-notch teams

PLYMOUTH – Plymouth edged Green Bay Notre Dame, 3-2, in a match-up of boys soccer powerhouses here Saturday.

The nonconference win hiked the Panthers’ record to 16-2-2 and stretched their winning streak to eight. The Tritons, ranked No. 5 in the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association’s Division 3 poll last week and honorable mention this week, dropped to 9-6-3.

“A great game this Saturday morning. We knew it was going to be difficult because we were going to play against a talented team,” said Panther head coach Rommy Herrera.

“We came out very strong looking for the win right away and it was not a surprise that with just 30 seconds in we were already winning the match.”

Junior midfielder Dylan Koehn’s quick goal, assisted by Corby Gafney, gave PHS a 1-0 lead.

Senior defender Collin Meyer gave the Panthers the lead for good, 2-1, on goal at the 16-minute mark. Senior forward Eric Novak’s goal pushed Plymouth’s lead to 3-1 at the 28-minute point.

Gafney paced PHS in assists with two and Koehn had one. The Panthers led 3-2 at halftime.

“I am very proud of how the team played today. We showed good character and attitude during the entire game. We fought hard for 90 minutes and that’s why we won today,” said Herrera.

Scoring one goal each for the Tritons were Cam Knight in the 10th minute and Elijah Dercks in the 33th minute. Evan Watzka and Jake LeBreck were credited with one assist each.

PHS had an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. Panther goalkeepers Cole Bogenschuetz and Saunders Gentine made two saves each. Triton goalie Charlie Parrish had four saves.

“The first half we played smart, connecting good passes and defending well. We pressured their defense fast and with numbers, and forced them to turn the ball over many times,” said Herrera.

“The second half was more conservative for both teams and there were no chances to score for any team.”
